We’ve got recently added a brand new pet to our family – an African Pygmy Hedgehog. A good looking animal, with a really cute face, and a stunning nature made much more endearing by their shyness.

They’re an uncommon pet, however are getting an increasing number of common as time goes by. The African Pygmy Hedgehog comes from northern Africa, and was first domesticated within the late 1980’s – that is virtually 30 years! I only turned aware of them being pets a couple of months ago. They aren’t a lot pygmy as slightly smaller than the usual european hedgehog, they usually are available many alternative colour variations at a value that isn’t too affordable – shop around although and you may get som real bargains!!

“Don’t they’ve fleas?” was the first thing my mother asked, once I broke the information that we had one other pet. They don’t! Wild ones do, but captive bred domesticated animals are free of these pests. Obviously if one other animal in the house will get them, a cat or a dog possibly, then the parasites will latch on to your hedgehog.

As pets, they are fantastic. They make some very strange noises – they “humph” and “pumph” as you disturb them, curling themselves up and making their sharp spines rigid to the touch. Phrase of warning: handle your hedgehog with care, as the spines are extremely sharp and harm, so use a towel or glove to handle your animal and avoid injury. This said within a couple of minute of protesting, your hedgehog will come round and curiosity will get the better of it (if it takes longer than this, then your hedgehog may very well be stressed or ill) and it’ll uncurl and start sniffing. Put it down on the carpet, and let it explore. You might want to maintain your eye on the place your animal goes – as hedgehogs are nocturnal, they will search out the darkest spot they can discover and curl up in!

The spines, like child enamel will fall out at around 3 months outdated, and then again a few months later. This is nothing to fret about. They replace their spines like we change teeth, but they’re barely thinner when they fall out and due to this fact sharper! Talking of teeth, hedgehogs have a nice full set of enamel that are moderately sharp and after they chunk they are going to latch on! To make them let go, there are a few issues you can try – blowing a pointy burst of air straight into their face can work, as can dowsing them in chilly water.

You’ll be able to maintain a hedgehog indoors in a relatively small cage (36″ x 24″ x 18″), though some people prefer to go to town. They’re very inquisitive and clever creatures who have to hold their minds occupied – a tube (previous carpet roll), a ball, a toy with a bell in it are all welcomed. At round three months of age you may as well introduce a large wheel (for rat or chinchilla/degu) to permit your hoglet to exercise – they are going to walk round 7 miles each evening!!! Simple to feed too – they’ll eat fruit, greens, dry cat meals (guess quality), moist cat food, minced unseasoned chicken, beef, turkey, mealworms, morioworms, crickets and many others – so just about something! Just just remember to add essentials to their food plan like vitamins and important oils which will be purchased at your native pet store.

With regular handling, your hedgehog will become used to you, used to the sounds and smells of the house, and venture out whenever you least count on it! They turn into much less “huffy” and more social, and will happily take mealworms from your hand (watch the enamel) and assist you to stroke them with out spiking you! This is great and you’ll very quickly fall in love along with your new pet, as they are so adorable. They will be bathed, although they aren’t too eager on the process, with child shampoo and warm water, followed by a fast dip in olive oil and heat water to situation the pores and skin – in any other case they undergo with dandruff.

One final thing to inform is that they’re simply litter trained – it took 2 days to litter prepare ours. The key? Line the litter tray with tender paper towel, the first time that they poop (which they do loads), move it and put it in their litter tray. They will associate this then with the bathroom, and within 24 hours you’ll discover your hedgehog makes use of its toilet and nowhere else.

They are surely nice enjoyable to own, and upon getting one you wont look back. Ours known as Pink – as a result of like the singer she has blonde spikey hair and is full of attitude and boy does it suit her!!!!
