Welsh ponies were bred in the United Kingdom, specifically Wales. There are several different variations of the Welsh Pony, and they are popular for a number of reasons, for everything from horse riding and shows to pit pony and work horse.
For a long time the Welsh pony was used as a work horse. They were used by the British government in times of war to carry heavy guns and other equipment in areas that were too rough for vehicles to handle, and were even occasionally used as mounted infantry.
The jobs found for the Welsh ponies were numerous including, working on the farm, pulling coal from the coal mines, and helping the mail carrier in their postal route. Traditionally, everyday tasks were considered to be better handled by the Welsh pony.
They were noticed, as time went on, that they had tremendous characteristics to perform well in shows and jumping events, they did extremely well in all competitions, and were gently enough for small children to mount.
The Welsh ponies have no spots, and are always a solid color Varieties of this pony most commonly seen include black, bay and chestnut.
Sweet, loyal, gentle, having a strong spirit, are all traits that make most people love these animals. A strong stamina is a characteristic of the Welsh pony that makes it outlast other horses much larger and those that seem much stronger. The Welsh pony is quick to train and quick to learn. Due to this fact, the Welsh pony would be a great selection for the person learning how to train horses.
This unique, bold, beautiful, and free breed of pony, the Welsh ponies, are able to jump as high as the others, carry children with ease, and run extremely fast. They handle harsh climates well and seem to even enjoy the cold.
