An exotic pet may seem to fit your jet-setting lifestyle, you may like to do things differently, or feel that it will go better with your designer clothes and gourmet food. Consider the following before you choose an exotic pet.

The term exotic pet refers to a broad classification of wild animals that are not typically found in most homes. They can include reptiles, rodents, birds, and other categories of animals. When you bring home an animal that was not bred for domestication, you are taking it from its natural, preferred environment.

Exotic pets are not domesticated, and they can be difficult to manage, no matter how stylish they look. In certain circumstances they can attack their owners, simply because they are out of their natural environment.

Care and Feeding of Exotic Animals

Do you know where to find the food your exotic pet eats? Or how much to feed it? Most wild animals catch and eat as much as they can in the wild to ensure survival. Overfeeding an exotic pet is unhealthy, and underfeeding it will add to the frustration and possible aggression of the animal. Consider also that many of them need live food – not always a pleasant task for the owner.

Exotic pets have exotic illnesses too, ones your local vet may not know how to treat. Are you ready for the additional time, travel and expense you will incur to find a specialist vet who can treat your exotic pet’s illness?

Do You Know the Laws Regarding Your Pet?

There are laws governing ownership of exotic pets, and they differ depending on your location. You may need a permit or special license, so do some research before you go out and buy your pet.

Local regulations will probably require that you make sure the exotic animal is secured on your property. This is to prevent possible injury to neighbors and their pets, as an animal in unfamiliar surroundings may react aggressively due to stress and fear. This is your responsibility, and you will have to buy or build an appropriate enclosure.

Before you get an exotic pet, consider whether it is the right step for you – and for the animal. Exotic pets are a lucrative business as long as there is a demand for them, but just because they are available does not make it the right thing to do – for you or for the animal.
